A song about plastic balloons :D free download on my Soundcloud.
If you’re not from the Philippines and you’re not familiar with this crystalline colored sticky gel resin that you squeeze out and ball around a little stick and then you blow it into a giant resilient bubble ball, check out Mikey Bustos’ plastic balloons tutorial on YouTube:

Chords: C F D G

Plastic balloons
Rainbow colored afternoons
With our plastic balloons
In our rainbow colored afternoons

How I’d love to take a walk with you
Under the sun and under the moon
Stroll away all the day by the bay
Hand in hand nothing planned just me and you

With our plastic balloons
In our rainbow colored afternoons
With our plastic balloons
In our rainbow colored afternoons
Plastic balloons
Rainbow colored afternoons
Plastic balloons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)
Rainbow colored afternoons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)

Shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa
Shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa
Shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa pa pa pa
Shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa

Oh how I’d love to (I’d love to take a walk with you)
Stroll away all the day by the bay just me and you

With our plastic balloons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)
In our rainbow colored afternoons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)
With our plastic balloons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)
In our rainbow colored afternoons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)
Plastic balloons (pa pa pa)
Rainbow colored afternoons (pa pa pa)
Plastic balloons (pa pa pa)
Rainbow colored afternoons (pa pa pa)

Shoobee doobee doobee pa pa pa
Shoobee doobee doobee pa pa pa
Plastic balloons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)
Rainbow colored afternoons (shoobee doobee doo pa pa pa)

A song about when you wake up and it’s raining and it’s cold outside and you just want to stay in bed snuggled in your blanket sipping hot chocolate! :)

Also, my first song with Tagalog / Filipino lyrics. ^_^

Chords: B E D A

Sa umagang ito
Ang sarap ng gising ko
Nang marinig ko ang tunog
Sa labas ng bintana ko
May patak, may tulo

Doo doo doo, doo doo doo

Umuulan na naman
Pumapatak ang ulan
Kailangan ba talagang
Bumangon sa higaan
Umuulan na naman, umuulan na naman

Doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo

Sa umagang ito
Ang sarap ng naramdaman ko
Ang ginaw ng panahon ngayon
Habang nakabalot
Sa aking kumot

Doo doo doo, doo doo doo

Umuulan na naman
Pumapatak ang ulan
Kailangan ba talagang
Bumangon sa higaan
Umuulan na naman, umuulan na naman

Umuulan na naman
Pumapatak ang ulan
Kailangan ba talagang
Bumangon sa higaan
Umuulan na naman, ang hirap iwanan ng higaan kapag
Umuulan

Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo

Sa umagang ito ang sarap ng gising ko

An original image will become a prized possession (part 2)

As a designer there were primo jobs to be had, newsletters, annual reports, corporate brochures, album covers, posters, book covers. Budgets were good, i.e. you could actually make a living designing newsletters. These were not your everyday corporate communications tools, these were conceptual and colorful and expensive to produce. That all changed. Enter Pagemaker and the CEO could have his secretary “produce” the newsletter. Those projects disappeared. As did annual reports. Album covers became CD covers and are now reduced to postage stamp- size images on iTunes. Social media takes the place of many branding projects. YouTube is now an advertising media for new products. The projects are dwindling for everyone.

As we head further into a totally digital world I contend design will take a backseat, but illustration won’t. Where once I thought being a designer had many more advantages with not only the type of projects but also the budgets, my feeling today is that design will continue to shrink, illustration will expand. Why the optimism? The market will crave images and those that will be doing the craving will be without a resource. Except for hiring illustrators.

Look no further than the area of game design, 3-D movies, apps and information graphics, which are totally illustrated. Think somebody’s secretary can do that? Art trumps design in all these areas. And if designers can’t draw they’re missing out on tomorrow’s opportunities; illustrators aren’t. The bottom line is that the future of illustration is brighter than any time in the past. We will be able to charge more for what we do because we’ve combined the essence of design and illustration into a new art form. We’ll stop referring to what we do by traditional classifications; we won’t be designers or illustrators, we’re now visual communicators.

Commissioned art work: Peacock Diptych.

I did mockups and studies and pencil sketches for this one because they’re large pieces (large for me anyway - 18 x 24 inches each).

This is the initial study. I want the peacocks to have this level of detail…

…but I want the poses to be more dynamic, like so. The one on the left is an Indian Blue peacock and the one on the right is a Java Green peacock.

The clients wants a vintage-looking gold/ochre background and he’ll probably have the pieces framed and positioned this way in his home.

I was going to do the tail feathers like this but these studies are too stylized. I want the final artworks to have a vintage ornithological illustration look, so I have to stay kinda realistic.

So I’ll do the tail feathers like this. Still stylized and intricate, since that’s really my style, but more realistic than my previous study.

Worked on the tail feather lines lines lines over several days. Whew! Still have to fill in the “eye” colors and add details, but the hardest part is over.

Now to work on their faces. Here’s where you can start to see the difference between the Indian Blue peacock and the Java Green peacock. You’ve probably heard of albino peacocks too, but what about peach, violet, cameo, opal, and charcoal? While researching for this commission I came across so many peafowl breeds and varieties! If you’re curious, check out Peafowl Photo Gallery and Peafowl Varieties Database. :)

Here’s where I ended today. I’ll finish by the end of the month.

Colors slightly off because I just took pictures with my phone.

Simple PHP Gallery (Gallerina) Demo

While updating my website, I coded some PHP to automatically generate a portfolio gallery for my images. I’m calling it Gallerina and releasing it as open source. :D I’m able to update my online portfolio much faster now because I just have to create folders and put images in them and edit some simple text files instead of coding all the HTML by hand… anyway you can check out the demo/instructions/download here. :)

"As an artist, I’m learning that not everyone will like, understand, or approve of my work - and it’s okay. People are entitled to their opinions and I’m entitled to mine. My opinion is that I have to find two things in my work: personal fulfillment, and a way to practice it sustainably."

Day 1, 2, and 3 of this painting.

Colors slightly off because I just took pictures with my phone. The paper is actually white (just a tinge of cream) and the painting is charcoal with tints of blue, brown, and violet.

Not advocating anarchy; I still prefer capitalism though I’m trying to consume less create more.

But I really love that the world’s seventh largest city, São Paulo in Brazil, banned ALL outdoor ads five years ago and enjoys thriving economy and culture today. Visual pollution, mental pollution cleanup. :)
